Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 August 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Memory Explorer app ("the app", "we", "us") handles your information. In short: your timeline lives on your own device, we don't run any servers that store it, and the only place any of it can leave your device is a request you deliberately trigger yourself.
Information we collect
We do not collect personal information. The app has no user accounts, no login, and does not send your timeline, photos or profile to us or to any server we operate.
Data stored on your device
Everything you enter — moments, periods, categories, notes, your profile, and any photos you attach — is stored locally on your device only, using on-device storage and the device's own file system. It never leaves your device unless you explicitly export or share it yourself. Deleting the app deletes this data.
The "Describe" AI feature
If you use the free-text "describe a memory" feature, the text you type is sent directly from your device to OpenAI's API to turn it into structured entries — it does not pass through any server of ours, and we never see or receive it. This feature only works if you've entered your own OpenAI API key, which is your responsibility to obtain and which is subject to OpenAI's privacy policy. If you don't use this feature, no memory content is ever sent anywhere.
Your API key itself is stored in your device's secure keychain (on iOS/Android) so it never leaves the device either. The web version has no keychain to use, so it falls back to browser storage on the device you entered it on — avoid entering it on a shared or public computer.
Photos and location
Photos you attach stay on your device; the app generates thumbnails locally for display. If a photo has GPS coordinates in its metadata, the app resolves them to a place name using your device's own location services, entirely on-device — this doesn't involve us or a network request to any server of ours.
Backup and export
The app lets you export your timeline to a JSON file and import one back in. Exporting hands the file to your device's own share sheet (or triggers a browser download on web) so you choose where it goes — we never receive a copy.
Analytics and advertising
The app contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking. We do not build a profile of you and we do not sell or share data, because we do not collect any.
Software updates
The app may download updates over the internet through the Expo / EAS Update service so you receive improvements without reinstalling. These requests involve standard technical information (such as your device's IP address and app version) handled by the update provider to deliver the correct update. They are not used to identify you and are not received or retained by us. See Expo's privacy policy at expo.dev/privacy.
Children's privacy
The app does not knowingly collect any personal information from children or anyone else, for the reasons above.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised "last updated" date.
